Re-screwing into holes with wood filler?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a neck that doesn't quite fit a fender jazz body. It's about 2 millimeters from sitting snugly in the neck pocket. Is it possible to fill the holes with a wood filler or glue so one can drill into it again, but slightly off center from where the original holes were?

Thanks,

Peder J. Ottawa, ON

Fill the holes with wood dowels and glue, then re-drill.

+1... just did this on a guitar that I built for my son. I actually did one worse... I made holes in a brand new neck, only to realize that I had put the wrong bit in the drill (too large) I filled the holes with some titebond and hardwood dowels, and re drilled to the proper size the next night. DO NOT perform luthiery when you're in SERIOUS need of sleep!

Had the same issue with a Squier P neck and an OLP body. Glued some dowels into the existing holes and redrilled. Had to do the same thing with the bridge.
Take your time and have some fun with it.

Filler won't hold, dowels do - they provide fresh wood for the screws. Doweling is the way to go.

Agree about the doweling for repositioning screws... however, if you ever have just a stripped screw hole and don't want to drill & dowel, you can swab the inside of the stripped hole with CA glue (super glue; I use the gap filling consistency for this job), and let it dry; it should then grab the screw very nicely.
