Re-spraying Krylon over Krylon

Sign in to disble this ad
I painted the face of a headstock with Krylon Gloss Black.

It doesn't look even, no runs, but the thickness is inconsistant and I need to go over it tomorrow.

Should I lightly sand with 220 before re-spraying?

(No applicable info on the Krylon site)

Yes, sand it level before re-spraying. I'd do 220 until level, then lightly with 400 for the smoothest surface to spray the next coat. Wipe off the sanding dust after each sanding. Spray lightly to avoid runs and drips and get a level surface..

Thanks, I was hoping you'd reply. I may have held the can too far from it because it has a textured look. I sprayed 3 light coats with a minute between, and repeated that after about 30-45 minutes.

Later on I'll make my first attempt with wipe-on poly on the back. I searched and found a lot of good info in your posts on the subject.

Yes, you might have had a problem with the paint drying before it got to the bass. I've had that happen. It should turn out all right with a bit of work. If the next coat doesn't do it, you can sand and do another.

I'm just spraying some Krylon gloss white on a metal radiator cover. It sure dries fast. Couple more coats and it'll be done.

The wipe on poly is easy to work with. Just don't try to put it on too thick or go over and over the same spot. I like to use the shop towels from Kimberly-Clark. I get mine from Home Depot. They come in a roll and look like paper towels, but are not textured and very absorbent. Regular, non-textured kitchen type paper towels work too. Pour a small amount of the poly into a clean tuna can and seal up the container so it doesn't dry on you.

For safety sake, don't wad up a used towel and toss it in the garbage. Soak it in water first. Sometimes you can start a fire due to spontaneous combustion, as many woodworkers have unfortunately found out.

Let us know how it turns out.

Good advise when working with linseed oil.

It's better now, but nowhere near a factory done look. I'll post a pic when I've got it together. Thanks again.

I might go over this again, that smudge bugs me. The wipe-on poly is nice to work use.
