Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys im in a bit of a sticky situation. I borrowed a Mark Hoppus Jazz for a freind for awhile because my bass is broken.
Last night i was tuning it and from what i could see the saddle for the A string chipped and the string wont stay in its correct place on the nut. Laso this a bone, 4 string nut.

So TB'ers how could I go about fixing this?

Buy a new nut. Your local music store most likely has a direct replacement in stock.

sounds like you are rough on basses Either get a new nut and try to replace it yourself, or have a tech do it. Try not to break anything in the meantime, though.

Do you think I could make the saddle wider for the A string?

Are you talking about the nut or the bridge?

I think you'd better have someone in the know, work on this bass.

Hi.

From the sound of it -if I was the friend who did lend You the bass- I'd be super happy if you didn't try to fix it yourself.

You can't just go filing the nut slots for the heck of it, and most definitely can't go filing the saddles.

I feel for Your bass(es), and for your friend too.

Regards.

A Saddle (usually 4 on an electric 4 stringer) is where a string "rests" back by the pickups. The Nut is where a string "rests" up the neck before the tuners.

Take it to a shop to get the nut replaced. Best would be to tell your buddy before you take it: he may have a preferred shop or a shop he does NOT want his bass in.

Tell Your Friend

Whether it's a bridge saddle or a nut that's broken, tell your friend BEFORE any repairs are made and ask him what he wants you to do.

Your friend was considerate enough to loan you his bass. Show him the same consideration.

This is ABSOLUTELY the right thing to do. It happened while you were using it, so rather than make any changes, you should talk with him and pay for any repairs. That's the ethical thing to do.
