Question RECOLORING MY BASS (help?)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, just watched this video on how to get Steve Vai's swirl and i though it was pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cY4LXZqX-w and i though well if thats how you do a swirl i bet i could do just a solid color. Now, i have a jazz bass and I was thinking of doing a new color, so obviously it looks like i can do one single color but my main concern is:

1. what do I need to do beforehand to the bass body?
2. what kind/type of paint do I need?
3. WHAT ELSE IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW???

It's called refinishing, and it is discussed in detail on many TB threads if you search for "refinishing". Please search rather than ask for another rundown - it's pretty well covered.

There is excellent information online at http://www.reranch.com as well, and that site and Stewart-McDonald.com are great sources for refinishing supplies.

IMO a good refin which includes stripping the existing finish and doing the work properly will take you 20-40 hours of labor. Doing plenty of your own homework before you start will enhance the quality of the finished project.
