Recommend a luthier...

My 5 string bass neck is way too beefy... recently causing tendonitis symptoms in my wrist and hand. I'd like to "sand" or strip down the neck more flat than "C" shaped and also refinish the neck and body. Current finish is tung oil.

Who is the man to talk to?

I'll chime in since you haven't gotten another response. If I were you, I'd try to find someone local, especially if you're near a big city. Where do you live?

Thanks bro.. Alabama, and I haven't had exceptional luck dealing with local guitar techs and builders. I'd rather ship the bass to a respected builder and not have to worry about getting ripped off or shotty work. Also... I paid $5200 for this bass, it needs to go to a professional bass/guitar luthier.

If you paid $5200 for a bass, I'm betting it was built by a luthier who has a name similar to the one on the headstock of your bass, and who offers repair work on basses that have his name on their headstock...no?

iow, send it to the guy who built it.

I know who built the bass, I designed and ordered the bass. He is no longer building bass/guitars, and I don't know how to get in touch with him. Not that it matters, b/c he isn't in the business anymore.

I don't need advice on what I could do, can anybody recommend a luthier? Thanks.

Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI. They're about the best around.

Knowing the whole story, you're right to find an experienced luthier. If it were me, I'd at least send an email to John Hall at bluescreekguitars.com. He's an acoustic guitar guy, but a master luthier, very trustworthy, and he answers emails.

I would recommend Matt Baker, an instructor at Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery who has top notch chops and will be able to refinish the neck after the shape is changed...I also second elderly instruments.
