Question Recommended bass setup place in London, England?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I have spent some time trawling through all these posts (with great interest) hoping to find anyone's recommendations for a good place to get a bass set up in London.

I am a beginner and have a pretty cheap bass (Ibanez GSR200) but I was fortunate enough to win it through work - well, kind of. (They offered to buy me one for no more than £200 and after picking up a few different kinds the Ibanez just felt right). So I had limited choice, but I love it and it's serving me well while I learn.

But I believe getting it set up would help a bit. It still has the original store strings on it and I'm sure the action could be better. Don't know enough about truss rods to try adjusting it myself...
My ex-boyfriend did an initial adjustment for me but I think it could do with more. He even agreed!

And I am too scared to walk into a shop in Denmark Street (with it's bad reputation) for fear of someone either ripping me off, doing a crap job, or just taking me for a complete idiot. With my limited knowledge I'm afraid to say this could happen!

I have searched online extensively and now simply feel overwhelmed. I've found The Gallery in Camden. Anyone know fo this place?

Apologies if this is a thread which has been posted many times before - I looked and couldnt' find anything for this exact query.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I would walk into a music shop, ask what they charge for a set up on your bass and if the price is agreeable ( I would say 40 pounds + cost of strings is about average) tell them you want it set up with whatever strings you want ( I would recommend some mediums) and you want the action as low as possible without buzzing. You will sound like you know what you are doing as long as you don't tell them otherwise.
