Reference-less knobs

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried a search, but I couldn't find anything obvious, so my apologies if this has been posted here before.

My bass has three knobs on it, two to control their respective pick up volume, and a third to control the tone. The trouble is that they are just completely plain, with some grip on the outside edges, but other than that they are completely reference-less, that is, I have no way of telling what "setting" they are at a given point. So I only have three "settings" so to speak: full on, full off or somewhere in between.

So that's my problem. I need someway of getting a more exact reading. I suppose there are two ways I can think of, one is to may a pen mark on the knob, but I wouldn't know what kind of pen to use. Or two, put a nail or screw into the side, but I could easily screw that one up also, so any help would be appreciated, thanks.

-Bernard.

If you're worried about damaging or altering the knobs, just use some white-out on the top of the knob as a reference mark. It'll wipe off easily if you want to go back to "nude".

The best thing to do IMO is to buy another set of knobs. If you can get the exact same ones, then carefully scribe a reference mark on the current knobs. Then you can replace them if you decide to sell the bass or get tired of the modified knobs. If you can't get the exact same knobs, but ones that will fit, get a set that have either a scribe mark or a numbered scale and use those. Save the originals.

on my bass, i bought a small bottle of white model paint, taped off a rectange on the top of each knob, and just painted them. The model paint will scratch off if i use my fingernail, but through normal use the lines have been readable for well over a year. simple fix

i would assume white out would provide the same results.

Good thinking guys; I never thought of using twink (that's the same as white out to you Americans) that'll do well for now.

Cheers,
-Bernard.
