Refinishin in Matte Black

Sign in to disble this ad
So sometime in the future (unsure of the date) I plan on getting an SX bass. I'd like to get a jazz 5 copy. Unfortunately, they only come in one finish, sunburst. I really would like to re-finish the bass in a matte black finish. Do you think that a flat spray paint with a matte clear would be a durable enough finish, if I sand the surface well enough? Or is there something more guitar finish related I should look into?

Post deleted. The recommended paint (two-part urethane) is probably unsafe to spray.

i just redid a bass in flat black. stripped it with citristrip, sanded it a bit and used interior/exterior paint i got from a hardware. (velspar brand iirc) it was experimental, and it actually turned out nicely. my neighbor even pinstriped it, kind of a hot rod look to it. ive used duplicolor automotive paint, and that works well too. flat black is tricky because it shows your mistakes very well. take your time and do lots of thin coats, do layer it too think. i may have to post pics a bit later...

Did you sand it down to wood, or just scratch the surface of the finish? I'm interested in a matte finish, with little shine, vs satin with some shine. I might even go for a flat finish with no shine at all.
