Refinishing bass hardware?

Sign in to disble this ad
The hardware on my recently purchased bass has seen better days. The monorail bridges have a "brushed chrome" finish that is bumping/bubbling but steel wool doesn't do anything to it. The finish on the tuners has tarnished or is coming off. What makes things worse is that Ibanez doesn't sell replacement hardware for this bass anymore.

What could I do to refinish the hardware? I thought about getting it all powder coated but I don't thing the tuners could stand the 490 degree curing temperature.

Did you want to recreate the brushed chrome look, or go with something different?

I was thinking going gloss black to match the knobs. I've got Rustoleum spray paint and primer for metal - would that work?

The parts are probably die cast zinc. The bubbling is corrosion where sweat has made it through the original coating and the salt is "rusting" the zinc. To get it all looking new would cost a bunch more than new hardware. All the "sick" metal would need to be removed and a good metal filler used. It would be just like doing body work on a car.

Bummer. I'll have to find out if the newer BTB bridges are the same size as the older ones.

Thanks!
