Refreshing a Lakland US neck

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, I have a Lakland 55-94, with the regular oil-finished maple neck. Now after much playing the bass, the back of the neck is a bit dirty, the color of the parts where my thumb touches the neck is darker (even with a slightly greenish tint) than say, the back of the head.

I would like to refresh this neck, but Dan Lakin never answered my question about how to do it. I guess I should carefully sand the back of the neck, but regarding the oil finish, which oil should I use? I know here different people use different kinds of oil, but I'd prefer to use the original type of oil that is used used by Lakland in their factory.

Any idea, suggestions?

Got a response from Lakland

Here's what Kirk @ Lakland replied, for those who can be interested in oil-finished neck care:

You can sand the stain with fine (1200 grit) wet/dry sandpaper with a little mineral spirits or naptha to remove the stain. Remember to do this in a well ventilated area and wear gloves.
We use tung oil here in the shop. You should be able to find it in a woodworker store or online. Follow the directions on the container. When the finish is dry, gently scuff the entire neck wit fine steel wool or grey Scotch brite. At this poin it is a good idea to apply a coat of clear paste wax to the neck. Again, scuff the neck with the steel wool to obtain the matte finish.
Periodically, you should clean the neck. We use pure orange oil for cleaning. This will take off any wax so you will need to reapply the wax.
I usually avoid lemon oil. Usually, what is sold as lemon oil contains additional thinners and silicones. Pure orange oil is easy to find with no additives.

How long ago did you contact Dan? Because Dan has been out of the office for over a month and he's still out.

It was a long time ago, maybe 2 years. I sent him 2 emails regarding this, at 6 months interval but never got a response. But the day before yesterday, I found Kirk's email for technical questions, and he replied very quickly and thoroughly.

Old post, yet still good info. I was looking to do this to my US DJ...anyone know what "clear paste wax" to look for. Don't want to mess it up with the wrong stuff.
