To refret or buy a neck ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Im still fairly new to playing, and would appreciate any help. I have an old Yamaha TRB-Q, and its going to need frets soon. I was wondering if i could get, and fit an aftermarket neck on this. The neck i have is fine, but am wanting to know if i could get a brighter tone with maybe a maple fingerboard ? Just juggling a few thoughts. Thanks all !

Maple fingerboards are brighter than rosewood, but I wouldn't change the neck. I'd go with a re-fret.

You can't guarantee what the resonance match-up will be like, it may better/not so good. Re-fret will subliminally add a bit of brightness if the frets have been low for some time, tends to sound a bit...roundish? when the crowns of frets are flatted right out, my 2.

there may not be any replacement necks to fit that old yamaha.

if it's not built to normal fender neck joint specs, forget it.

take the frets out, lightly sand fretboard, put some epoxy on it and you have a nice fretless!

Do a polish with 000 steel wool with some baby oil, then do a set up. You may not need new frets. You almost never do.
