Remedy for Muddy Sounding strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, Is there any remedey for strings that sound Muddy? I have notices that when I changed the strings on my Galveston 6 stringer the B string sounds very muddy. It didn't sound that way until I changed the strings from the ones that came on it. Other than this I like the way this bass sounds and feels so I don't see a need to get rid of it if this is a minor problem that can be easily corrected.

You might have gotten a dead string. I've ran across that a few times. I don't know what brand you are using but dr high beams are pretty reliable.-joe

You could try getting a heavier gague B string than the rest of the pack.

I'm having a similar problem. I just changed strings on my new 5 string bass. Everything was fine until I changed strings. All of the strings are fine but the E is particularly "dead". It kind of just THUDS and dies off... They're La Bella flatwounds btw. I'm planning to contact La Bella and see if they're willing to send me a replacement.

It might also be the way the string lays across the groove in the nut. When I tweek a new guitar or bass, I check how each string fits each groove. If the string is making contact towards the back of the nut, in the groove and not the front, it will buzz or sound dead. I often remove material on the back (headstock side) of the nut as to make sure all the string movement his happening on the front (fingerboard side) of the nut. Basically, if the string is vibrating at all within the groove of the nut, it will sound dead! I've seen where the entire nut is sort of tilted forward and all 4 grooves needed to be re-worked. You would be suprised at what removing just tiny bit of material will do.
