Removal of a SEVERELY damaged nut?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently aquired an SX P-bass neck

The neck is in fine condition, straight, not warped, I knew this damage would be here when I got it, but not so severely.

Half of the nut is gone, which i knew about, but the other half is half gone.

what i mean is, the top half looks like it was pryed off but the other half stayed put.

What are some ways i could remove this little bit of nut without destroying the fretboard more? It's already chipped in a few places, nothing major. but i don't want to cause any more damage.

Run a saw down the middle of the nut, and collapse in the halves. If there is none poking above the surface of the baord, will be harder, but doable with a blade to collapse the sides in.

Use a nail set or punch with a hammer and tap it on the side of the nut. It should come right out.

Did this, took awhile but it finally worked.

I called the previous guy, he said he tried to cut it out with a butter knife. Not like pry it, but slice it.

Maybe thats why it was so difficult.

That's why he is a complete moron. Thank you for rescuing that instrument.

Well, maybe not a complete moron, at least he didn't use a blowtorch to melt it out.

Dang, I'm surprised he didn't put on a hockey mask and try using a chainsaw to get it out!
