Removing Epiphone control knobs...

Sign in to disble this ad
I just received a set of speed knobs (that go up to 11...) for my Thunderbird, and before I get stuck in, would like to know how to get the old ones off. Do I just lever them off with a screwdriver, or is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

I believe that if there is no screw in the side of the knob holding it in place, you just have to pull the knob off the shaft. You have to pull hard, but don't yank it suddenly, use long steady pulling. Using a screwdrivre to lever it off might scratch or chip your finish. You might be able to slip something like a really thin flat wrench under the knob and then lift it off without prying against the finish

a couple of techniques I found helpful -

put a wash cloth or other material down around the knob - and lightly use a spoon to pry up gently - a little, go to the opposite side - repeat - etc......work around it EASY......gently.....

JUST pulling will often result in damage to the pot, knob, or just be really frustrating.

Hi.

If it's stuck and You don't have any vintage or otherwise hard to replace ones there, break 'em.

Much cheaper than a broken potentiometer or chipped finish at the end of the day.

Regards

Protect the finish and use TWO spoons or forks from opposite sides - slide them under the edge of the knob and lever with both at the same time.
