Removing P-Bass Volume Knob w/ S-1 switch

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there, I did a quick search but I don't think I was using the correct terms.
Anywho, I'd like to replace the pickguard on my USA P-Bass but it has an S-1 switch on the Volume knob. Anyone have experience removing one of these? Would it be the same ol' stick a flathead under it and push up?
I admit I haven't actually tried anything but a little tug myself yet. This is only because I don't have a new pickguard for her yet and I was hoping someone here had experience and could chime in before I go fooling around with it.
Thanks a lot.

Need picture. A single tool will put uneven pressure on a press-fit knob.IF it's a simple press fit you would want to use 2 tools to even out the pressure. however if you have one atop the other then (generally) you really want to get the top unit 1st before doing anything. Occasionally the retention holes and allen screws can be REALLY tiny. Look especially carefully! For the best chance of pulling them with no damage IF they are press fit try two Popsicle sticks under the unit and lift both side with both hands.
If you see any hole......do NOT attempt to pull it even if the screw is loose as it may have an an indentation on the tuner-element: take the screw out 1st.

I recently replaced a friend's s-1 pbass's pickguard and ran into the same problem. Undo the screw, pull straight up gently, and make sure not to loose the plastic coupling sleeve.

Here's a good visual explanation.:
