Removing Pick Scratches

Sign in to disble this ad
Recently I was asked by our soundguy to play a set with a pick instead of my fingers on my otherwise mint (rarely played) Sting Ray. But even after only playing a few songs the scratches (rather like a cloudy haze) on the pickguard and especially the pups are quite noticeable. Not deep, but definitely there. Has anyone ever found a way of buffing these scratches out? I'm reluctant to try anything for fear of ruining it further. It wouldn't matter if I was keeping the bass, but I plan on selling it soon, and was hoping to sell it in "like new" condition.

Id like to know too, I bought mine 2nd hand "like new" and it has the same pick marks, wouldnt mind getting rid of them myself cause I play with my fingers too.

But to be honest, I dont think it will make that much of a diffrence in the price of the bass when you sell it, generally anyone buying "as new" will know there will be scratch plate scratches or button scratches possibly on the back.

what 'ray is it?

Meguiar's and others make automotive plastic scratch remover...might this help???...I know they use it on plastic headlights and light bars (automotive) with nice results...

Since the scratches are not deep, can you apply something like a Meguairs (sp?) polish? If you apply several coats, you should be able to successfully hide the micro scratches.

I know this doesn't address the pickup - for that I'm stumped!

most people will not care about scratches on the pickguard, actually that is the function of the pickguard , protect the body.

Also even you try to sell you bass " as new" the bass is used so people can expect this kind of " used bass signs" .

I do not think that some minor scratches on a pickguard or a " as new" pickguard can affect the price that you will get for it.
