I'm with thisSNsucks -- I only do a thorough fretboard cleaning when I change the strings. I have a bunch of rags that have a slight bit of saturation with dr. ducks ax wax, and I wipe down with that whenever I'm done playing (I have them lying around everywhere, in my gig bags, in drawers...)
When I get a new instrument in a trade or whatever, I usually break the whole thing down, clean it, restring it, set it up, and go. I only re-setup my instruments when (a) I'm bored, or (b) I feel like it's slipped far enough to annoy me.
The fretboard treatment thing is an amazing debate and I won't start that here. Personally, I don't put anything on my boards any more -- whatever is in my cleaning rags is all they get now. And when I do a thorough cleaning, I use 0000 steel wool first, then one of my soft rags. Toothbrush if gunk gets along the frets and defies the steel wool.
Cheers!
