Removing VMJ painted blocks

I want to get rid of the cheap black painted blocks on my Squier VMJ, should I use a solvent, or an abrasive? I want to eventually give the neck a nice coat of oil, but for now those blocks gotta go!

Update!

I went at the blocks for a while with some sandpaper, I planned on refinishing the whole neck anyway. Those blocks are definitely NOT paint. I gave up after about a half hour of gentle sanding.

I wanted a plain maple board, and it looks like I'm not getting it out of this bass!

So were the early vmjs decked with actual inlays?

IMO the inlays are the most attractive part of that neck. Don't screw it up - trade it or sell it and buy a replacement.
