| repainting a headstock

I have a fender p bass and i was considering repainting the headstock to match the body of the bass. Has anyone done this before? If so, I would appreciate any recommendations for paint or sanding. I'm a bit hesitant to pursue this on my own so I figured I'd consult some people with experience. Thanks.
