Question Repair Gurus - Haalp!

So I am wanting to do some "shining" up on my 94' 'Vette ProLine and had a couple of questions regarding a partial restoration.

My first problem is that I cannot seem to get the brass adjustable nut cleaned up. There is some mild tarnishing that I believe will start catching the strings. I'm afraid putting some type of tarnish remover on it because it might damage the finish if I accidentally get some on the neck or headstock. Any tips to cleaning these things up? There has to be an easier way than I'm thinking.

Second problem is purely aesthetic in that the bass has come battle scars from previous owners. I wouldn't bother refinishing the bass if I used the same hand positions that wore away the finish in a couple of spots, but I rest my thump on the top of the pickups or use the floating thumb tecnique. So I'd like estimates on the process or maybe a rough price on getting the bass refinished back to the original Nirvana black stain.

Third is cleaning up the neck mainly where the frets are grooved in against the wood. There are some uglies hanging out against those crevaces. Would a brillo pad or something to that sort do more harm than good?

Basically I'm wanting to bring this beast back to life and make it look as good as it still plays and I don't want to make a mistake and damage an instrument that I eventually want to pass on to my children. Would doing these things devalue the instrument?

Thanks in advance guys!!

Brasso will the the brass shining ina very sexy way. They will also not damage the finish of the bass. I would use nail polish to touch up the chipps, thats works on my Les Paul. Ge tthe book 'How to make your electric guitar play great'. its great for setting up and tweeking your guitar/ bass. I got it a while back and now every bass I own is set up using its magic forumlas!
