Repair question!

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some quick advice. I’ve been passively looking for a beater acoustic guitar (I know, I know) that I can throw in the trunk, drop in the dirt, pick out bass lines in bed, etc. I don’t know how understanding my wife would be if I brought my half-stack to bed while she was trying to watch t.v…
Anyway- Stumbled upon an Epiphone PR-150 at GC that had been dropped. The associate wouldn’t even put it back up on the wall after I played it, it was so bad. Anyway, they offered to sell it to me for $72, supposedly what they had in it. My question is this: With the damage (I will describe after), what can I expect from the guitar? I’m looking for 3 or 4 years of playability. Like I said, I just need a beater. I have nicer instruments but I don’t really play guitar.

It looks like it was either dropped hard or hit up against something at the front-bottom edge. It’s kind of hard to explain but it’s made almost a 3rd, flattened surface along the front-bottom edge (if you had it upright, not like you’re playing it). It doesn’t have any cracks running through it from the jolt, it is just kind of smashed flat on that edge. I don’t know much about instrument construction so I don’t know what to expect over time as far as expansion, contraction, and whether I can expect it to literally fall apart. I was thinking maybe I could just cover it with some sort of finish, etc. to keep It together/protected for a few years.
Thanks, and sorry for the novel…

I'm going to post this on an acoustic guitar forum, too. If I can find one...

Welcome to the LC.

We will gladly help you with construction and design of a bass. Your question would be better served in Set Up & Repair.

First, go to acousticguitarforum.com and post some pictures there if possible. Just like TB, there will be gear snobs that tell you to save your money and find a used Taylor that has solid top, back, and sides blah blah blah (so have your grains of salt ready and don't mention wanting to drop it in the dirt like you did here). Second, I have had my acoustic guitar since 2001. It's been dropped a couple of times, but it only seemed to damage the clear finish. My guitar still sounds great. What you want to look for is damage to the actual wood, not the finish.

EDIT: I just looked up the PR-150 and it seems to be a pretty cheap guitar. Unless you really want to get the cheapest deal you can find, getting that guitar with a considerable amount of damage already doesn't sound like that great of a deal.

Still waiting for my activation e-mail from acousticguitarforum so I can post there, lol. Thanks for the advice.

By the way, sorry that I posted in the wrong forum. It's cool if someone needs to move it...
