Repairing/ Restoring Peavey Finish?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,
I have a small issue with my Patriot...black and white marks all over the finish. Well, not all over, but in my OCD head it annoys the living ---- out of me. Scratches are fine, I don't mind those.

I have an 7 Patriot in seafoam/ teal green. Since I've never seen another Peavey in this colour, I don't want to strip it or do anyhting major to it, I just want to get rid of the imperfections.

From what I've read, old Peavey cases would leave black goo on the body. I've also heard that some finishes, after some use will start to create white streaks or spots in the finish. My peavey has both.

I went to Guitar center and Sam Ash to figure this out. The first guy at Sam Ash (who I don't mind, but doesn't offer the best advice) said to use guitar polish. It smoothed out the marks, but didn't eliminate them.

The guy at GC said to use Acetone. Acetone is not allowed anywhere near my basses at all unless they're getting refinished. I've seen acetone eat through plastic bottles and destroy finishes on desks and metal helmets.

Went back to sam ash. A different guy (who I trust a bit more) told me to try windex, and if that doesn't work, rubbing alcohol. I tried both, but they both left the finish a bit dull in some spots.

There's a large, cloudy swirl where I tried to remove the finish, surrounded by pristine, shiny, mirror like finish. I tried guitar polish and carnuba wax. Both came close, but not quite what I'm looking for.

Long story short: There's marks on the body still that I don't want to experiment with until I get more opinions. There's marks on the headstock, but I don't want to risk damaging the decal. I need to get rid of the dullness and marks. Short of repainting it, what are my options?

Try scratch and swirl remover. It contains a very fine polishing compound in it that can remove light scratches and buff it up to a shine. Fender makes one that I've used with good results.

if that doesn't work buffing compound, with a heavier grit, might do it, but you have to be careful not to go too deep.

to remove the contour case foam black marks.. water and clean rags.

Acetone will etch your finish.
