Repairing strap buttons

Sign in to disble this ad
The strap button on the upper horn of my Lakland Skyline JO5 has stripped, so it comes out from time to time. Not all the way out, but out enough to make me uncomfortable. What is a good permenant repair for this. I've heard of the matchstick method, but that doesn't seem like a good fix.

Well, a matchstick or toothpick has it's advantages. It's real wood to fill the hole, rather than some kind of glue that could be troublesome. A toothpick almost always provides a permanent solution. Aftermarket strap locks often have smaller screws, which is rediculous considering the reasons one buys them to begin with. Yep. Toothpick.

Toothpicks and woodglue, believe it or not, is considered the proper method of repairing this.

I've used the toothpick and glue replair trick, and it's been a 'permanent' fix for the last two years or so since I did it.

I cheat a little bit. I sub out epoxy for woodglue. Woodglue always comes loose on me, so I use epoxy. Yes, I know I'll never get it loose, but that's the way it goes.

The proper way would be to plug the hole with a dowel and drill a new hole in it for the screw but the toothpick trick does work.

Iv'e always used a small length of plastic insulated electrical wire,poke it down the hole and get the measurement,cut it to size and then simply screw the strap button back in,if it's still loose,you will need a thicker piece of wire,in 25+ years of playing i have never had a problem when i used this method to fix it,no messy glue or anything,and you can get it out anytime if you need to,for instance if you decide to sell the guitar and replace the original strap buttons,hope this works for you,it's simple and very strong,the wire acts like a rawl plug,good luck. ;

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll go ahead with the matchstick/toothpick and glue trick.
