Replacement handle for a Fender case?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Fender case from the '80s with a busted handle. The rivets are still in place but one of the hinges broke and now it's barely hanging on. I've searched around for a replacement but the ones I've found don't have the same hole spacing, or they don't tell me what the spacing is so I have no idea if it's a direct replacement.

Is it worth trying to find an exact replacement, or should I just make do with whatever I can find and drill new holes in the case? Thanks.

I can't visualize what the issue is. Pic?

Luggage repairperson might give an alternate repair path.

The case needs a new handle. I'd like to find an exact replacement so I don't have to drill holes in the case. Either that or someone has to tack-weld the handle back together.

Hmmm. I would suggest trying to get a new plate manufactured and installed. It will cost you more than a new case, but it will guarantee working order, reliability and original aesthetics.

Go here: Stew-Mac case handle.

However, your first line of defense should always be your local brick and mortar. Go to your local Fender dealer and ask him to order a new handle for you. It's another way to start or reinforce a good relationship with them.

Installation: You will need a good pop rivet gun and proper sized rivets. You will also need backer plates (washers) to insure that the rivets do not pull through the case material.
  1. Peel back the lining on the inside of the case.
  2. Remove existing rivets with sharp nippers or
  3. Remove existing rivets by drilling through the rivet
  4. Remove handle
  5. Mount new handle in place with clamps of choice
  6. Don't forget to leave at least one of the holes free to work
  7. Install rivet with backer plate.
  8. Move clamp.
  9. Install next rivet and backer plate.
  10. Repeat.
  11. Glue lining back into place.
  12. Admire handy work.

The existing holes should be in good shape and suitable for the repair. If they are not, move handle hardware a half inch or so. It won't affect the balance of the case very much. Plug the holes with some saw dust and super glue. If you are very particular you can remove some Tolex from underneath the liner and patch it in.

Thanks for the detailed reply 202!

I asked my local Fender dealer about a handle and they say Fender doesn't supply them so I'll have to get a generic replacement.

The stewmac handle doesn't have the same dimensions.

There is a handle from Just In Case parts here, which looks like it will fit:

Think I will give it a shot.

To heck with it, I'm getting the Stew-Mac handle.
