Replacement Neck for Fender Jazz Special

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Fender Jazz Special. I bought it used and the neck was a bit warped (according to the guy who set it up when I initially bought it). I've never done anything about it, but now I am thinking about fixing it up.

So far as I know, the Fender Jazz Special is pretty much just a Precision body with a Jazz neck. Can I buy a replacement Jazz neck (ie from StewMac), or is there a special one that I need? Anything else I need to know before I do this?

It's the Made In Japan Jazz Bass Special from around 1987 or so? Like Duff McKagan, Richard Cousins, and Preston Hubbard used?

It's essentially a Jazz bass neck, so any Fender style neck should fit the body. My fretless JBS' neck wound up on a custom made body, but it had a Fender Geddy Lee neck on it for a while, and the fretless JBS neck fit the Geddy body just fine.

I would triple-check this information. It may be correct, but there are enough warnings and horror stories about this issue. Please make sure the distance from bridge to 12th fret, etc. is also the same. It's not all about neck size/neck pocket size.

Ummm...have you tried to straighten out the neck? I'd certainly try a truss rod adjustment before throwing money at it!

I'm going to take it in to the shop when I can (out of town for the week) and ask them to set it up. It has been sitting in a closet for a while, and probably needs it. I'll ask about the neck, too. Right now, it buzzes on the odd fret up past 12th but is fine lower down. I have a good recommendation for a shop from some friends who play around town so hopefully somebody who knows more than I do can get it ship-shape again.
