Replacement necks: Status Vs. Moses

Sign in to disble this ad
I posted a while ago about putting a graphite neck on my Stingray.

I've been looking at two companies: Status and Moses.

Is there a large difference in the quality of these brands? Is one generally preferred over the other?

I've been researching this today myself. It seems to be the general consensus that Status is of higher quality than Moses. I've read some complaints about Moses along with praise. Haven't really seen any posts where anyone was griping about their Status neck yet. I did notice a few people saying that Modulus necks were better than both, but you could buy two Moses necks for the price of those.

Please keep in mind this is just me summing up what I gleaned today. I claim zero experience with these necks.

I put a Moses graphite neck on my Stingray about 10 years ago. It went smoothly and no problems with the neck. The improvements were slightly better top end (slappers loved it-I didn't need it) and less need to tune the bass.

The downsides-expensive for very little improvement. The fingerbioard needed leveling and fret dressing to get the action where I wanted it.

A friend of mine who thinks he's Mark King loved the bass and ordered a Moses for his bass. I installed it for him. That neck too was about the same quality. He loved the bass for a short time but sold it when something else shiny caught his eye.

I sold mine because I never could get into the Stingray sound.

It's generally accepted that the Status necks are of higher quality than Moses.

I wouldn't again buy a graphite neck. Nothing really turns me off about them, I just don't find a huge improvement in sound in the real world of gigging. In fact, in a noisy room with a band, nobody will notice the difference.
