Replacement tuners for 2 Squire P-Basses

Sign in to disble this ad
I am trying to fix a couple of Squire Affinity P-Bass's for my Church. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera or calipers with me when I was checking them out. Each bass has 1 broken tuner. I know these are inexpensive Basses, so I would like to just replace the broken tuners. A complete set of tuners would improve the bass, but they would also cost more than they are worth.

Squire P-Bass 1, this one is an older bass. One of the tuners is missing a collar. This one has a large diameter shaft and clover leaf.

Squire P-Bass 2, this one is a newer bass, the a couple of the mounting screws that mount the tuner are snapped off. This one has a smaller diameter tuning shaft that goes through the head stock. Same clover leaf type of tuning pegs.

I checked my usual place here and didn't find anything that would work. http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/b...nersfender.htm

I will get the serial numbers to see which type I have. Thanks for any help...

Got the serial numbers. The older red one is a CD99030677. The newer black one is a CY05066895. The Black one I found in the link above so the tuners should be 006-2551-000 and the knobs 006-2550-000.

Its the red one that is still the question. It doesn't have an IC serial number, so I doubt the 005-4932-000 tuners will work. Any help on the older red one would be appreciated.

Thanks SurferJoe 46. I should have the basses in my possession tomorrow night. I called Sweetwater before Christmas to get the parts ordered, but have not heard back yet. My guess is they are struggling to find tuners for the 'CD-' SN Bass. Its interesting that this 'CD-' SN bass is red just like yours SurferJoe46. Not too surprising though, since they likely only offer a few colors on a Squier Affinty product....

Heard back from Sweetwater. They contacted Fender and Fender does not have any record of the 'CD' serial number, not surprising, just funny

Measured the tuners on the CD bass, the shaft is 0.510inches and the hole is 0.75inches. Hopefully I can find something that will work.

Here are some pictures of the basses showing the headstock. First 2 are the 'CY' Black bass, Second 2 are the 'CD' red bass.

At the time these CDs and CYs were being made, Fender tried to distance themselves from anything Sqiuer - and especially Affinity. No matter - they aren't vaporware and I own one as you own one of each - so the proof's in the pixs.

I know the CYs had the smaller, enclosed machines and there are reports that the CDs are pretty much a bolt-on with just the slightest amount of fudge to get them in the smaller headstock.

At this time I haven't made the changeover, as I already have the bigger open-gear machines on mine. Not too sure of the whole process, but hey - it's just a little wood that needs a slight opening-up to get the newer CD models in.

Since it appears that you have the necks DA'd at the mo, it might be a good idea to try to interchange the open ones for a closed one or two.

Fender got back to sweetwater. 0062408000, are supposed to be the right tuners for the 'CD' bass. I am placing an order for the parts with sweetwater today. I will update once I have the parts in and installed.

Hopefully, this info helps someone else who has a 'CD' serial number Squire P-Bass.

Got the parts in yesterday. The bag of the tuners for the 'CD' bass said 'CORT', so I am assuming Cort actually made that one for Fender, which is why it is so different.

On the black 'CY' Bass, on the new tuners there are 2 screws holding on the cover and 2 that mount the back cover of the tuner. Since one of the screws kind of stripped out, I am hoping to remove one of the cover screws and use that to mount the tuner and give it more support.

That should work OK - it all goes to holding things on and together at the same time.

Look what I just found:::

Got both basses fixed. The 'CD' still needs some setup work, got some buzzing right now, so I am still tweaking it. The 'CY' is back to playing the way I remember. Of the 2 basses I far prefer the 'CD' bass, I like the neck better and the sound is clear and punchy. The 'CY' bass sounds muddy and congested by comparison. I think that the Fender Squire 'CD' serial number basses are kind of a diamond in the rough, pretty impressed.

thanks for the help SurferJoe46

N/P - I find it interesting that a company called 'Reliant' had their paws into building basses for Squier too.

I knew Cort was one such manufacturer, and somehow I think another called something like 'SML' or 'SMS' did too - although I may have missed the accurate moniker of that name up somewhat.
