Replacement tuners for Peavey Cirrus? Gotoh GB7?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

So I was under the impression that the tuners on the Peavey Cirrus were Gotoh GB7s. I bought a Hipshot detuner years ago and that seems to be a GB7. I didn't think much of it and bought three more Gotoh Gb7 tuners to replace the ones on my Cirrus. When they arrived the posts were much bigger than the ones on my bass (including the Hipshot). After some measuring I've found that the post on the GB7s I bought were 3/8", while the posts on the bass are 5/16", but I can't seem to find GB7s with this post size anywhere! I've attached a picture of what I mean. Gotoh GB7 on the left and the stock Cirrus tuner on the right.

Any suggestions? I'm assuming Gotoh manufactures the GB7 with the 5/16" post since it's on the hipshot, but I can't find them... I've checked all over too, local and internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I forgot to mention I measured these with a clunky tape measure, so i might be + or - 1/16" or so...

EDIT 2: I found this site: http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/bass_tunersgotoh.htm which appears to have what I need but I'm trying to figure out the difference between threaded bushings, and screw-in bushings. For the record the stock tuners have the threads on the outside of the bushing, and the ones I purchased have threads on the inside.

+1, I'm also planning to change them, but I was only aware of differences in the size of the hole the fit into: 1/2" or 3/8".
The quilted tiger eye top cirrus comes with hipshot ultralites and as far as I can tell they are sold only in these two measures.
Hopefuly someone can clarify this.

The Hipshots (3/8" post) are a direct replacement for the GB7's. The Hipshot post is a little different as it doesn't have the "hourglass" taper found on the Gotoh's. The guts of the assembly still fit the headstock mounting hole and align properly. The Hipshot post will also pull the string through the nut slot at a slightly different angle but not enough to be of concern.

Edit: The above probably doesn't help much so let's try this: I have a set of original gold Cirrus tuners (like on the right in the pic) in really good shape (with a few exceptions). If you can use 'em, send me a PM.

Thanks Zooberwerx, but I'm precisely trying to get rid of those golden tuners.
I've already ordered some Hipshot UltraLites 3/8".
I'll come back with my experience.

So what was the outcome? I'm looking to put a d-tuner on my USA Millennium.

Don't you just hate it when these threads just peter out?

I've been after similar info as one of the tuners on the USA Cirrus 5 I just bought on eBay is broken.

I ended up buying a full set of Klusons from Italy - 50 Euros including shipping to UK - but if I wasn't so broke there are some rather special looking Duesenberg tuners that would fit (14mm or 9/16" drilling).
Otherwise there are Gotoh or Schaller tuners that fit, but your mileage may vary with regard to availability where you live.

Good luck!
