Replacing Gibson headstock decal.

Sign in to disble this ad
I purchased an SG reissue bass used off ebay (originally was not sure if it was authentic or a copy but later found out it was an original and not a copy) and the decal on head stock was sanded off (or maybe the veneer was removed not sure how Gibson does it) pic:

I purchased a water slide decal. Will i be able to apply it directly to the head stock in the pic or will i need to 'finish' the head stock somehow. Thanks in advance for any info!

EDIT: I wanted to add that I know apply decals is frowned upon around here at times but this bass IS a gibson (not epiphone) and I have no intention of selling the bass (just installed a set of dark stars in it and couldn't be happier)

best thing to do would be be to get some clear(matte, semi, or gloss depending on your taste) and give it a coat. Then apply decal, then another(few) coat(s) over that

I thought Gibson used inlaid veneers on their headstocks? I could be wrong, but I remember seeing a couple on eBay...

Gibson decal

If it is legit, I would send it back to Gibson and get it done by them.

It may cost a bit more, but if your logo is even slightly uneven, or finished differently, or anything.... you'll always get people wondering whether it is real or a fake.

Gibson will be able to check up the serial number etc, see that it is real and do the repair EXACTLY as it would have left the factory.

Some Gibsons are inlaid. Some have decals.

There is no reason to lay down a base coat or to rough up the existing finish.

How to do it:

Clean the headstock. Apply the decal in the right position. Allow to dry.

Gibson shoots clear coats of lacquer over the decal. It is the only way to protect the decal.
