Replacing output jack - tricky one

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my hands on a Hohner JJ (pretty good bass...and very cheap ) with a few issues in the electronics department. the some wires from the preamp to the pots had gone loose (crappy solder) and a buzzing output jack.

I suppose I've sorted the preamp problem...and as I only needed to replace the jack, thought it was going to be quick. then...I took a good look at the jack - how can I get it out? it may be rather silly, but I cant think of any way...its deep inside the body and I cant see any mounting nuts..

I've included some pictures from my crappy camera (sorry about low quality) to help you see the problem...

any thoughts?

cheers

It appears to be a barrel jack. The outside of the body is threaded. Sometimes the assembly gets covered with shielding paint and it is hard to see the nut. There should be a nut and a washer on it. The leads must be unsoldered and then the nut and washer are unthreaded from the barrel. Reverse the process with new parts. Expect to replace this jack on a regular basis.

Wrench. Occasionally, they are threaded into the wood. This is unusual. If that is the case, unsolder the leads and start twisting the barrel.

Do this with a good nights rest.

that would explain the markings on the wood (its not very clear, but you can see them in the second picture)

I've got no leverage point, so it should be hard to twist it out...mmm it'll be even worse to get the new jack inside...

uh well...thats a problem for another day hehe its way past my bedtime

thanks a lot for the input 202dy
