So I want to replace the tunner's on my traben because the stock (grover) suck. They won't stay in tune and getting them to be precise is impossible.
I want to go to schallers or gotoh but I want them to be open rather then sealed. where would I go to get the best price.

| | | | Modern tuning pegs are very good at holding pitch if strung correctly. The problem is usually one of slack storage.
Due to friction, slack gets stored between the nut and the tuning peg. When installing a string, gently tug on the string. It will drop in pitch. Then retune to pitch. Lather, rinse, repeat. It usually takes a few tries to get the string to hold pitch. Most folks call this protocol "stretching" the string. This is also true when a string has been installed on a guitar for a while. If it hasn't been done before, it needs to be done now. Occasionally, it is a good practice to do it whenever there is a tuning problem.
There is one cardinal rule: A string can only be tuned up to pitch. Never down. If the string is tuned down to pitch, the string should be stretched again. It is a good idea to drop the tuning below the target pitch and then tune up.

| | | | yep, and yep.
your keys are likely fine (grovers are good keys), and your tuning issues are most likely the strings getting caught in the nut slots or slipping and settling around the tuner posts from not being wound right.
are you turning the key while watching the tuner, nothing happens, then it jumps past where you're trying to get to? that's the nut grabbing the string. get it filed out by a pro so that the strings slip through it easily and you'll be fine.

BUT, when he first got it, the nut was very poorly done from the factory, cut too high and too narrow. |

I believe it's 202DY who notes that you can make custom round files by using a drill bit of the correct size with 1000 grit wet & dry sandpaper wrapped around it. Make sure the total diameter of the bit and paper is not too large.
