Replacing tuners on Danelectro short horn and Hofner Club bass

I wish to know if anyone has done this and what tuners they used.
To avoid neck dive the Hipshot Ultralites seem like an option but I would like to keep a more vintage vibe.
Any suggestions?

What's wrong with the tuners?

I know that the latest short lived reissue had a more substantial tuner (at least the Danelectro DC did) , but I don't know of anyone that sells them. You might want to go to a local music shop with a repair department and ask if you can scrounge through their odd parts bin. I've managed to find some good useable stuff that way really cheap.

Two are worn out and slip on each bass.
Both sets of original tuners were never very good quality and 40+ years of age/use makes it time to change them. In addition on the Dano one of the tuners doesn't turn well as a result of a fall or impact before I owned the bass.
The lack of small profile bass tuners is really surprising!

I didn't realize you had the originals. Yes, it's tough to find parts for these. I'm not surprised it's hard to find good small tuners. The originals never were all that great because of their guitar like dimensions. There is a Danelectro forum somewhere out there. They may be able to help. I haven't looked at the Stewart McDonald catalogue for a long time, but there might be something there.

Had a look at the Stewart Macdonald catalogue and they just had the usual Schaller Fender replacements, Hipshots etc.-nothig really applicable to these basses. They di have a lot of guitar tuners but those would not be useable because of bass strings diameters.
What are people doing with all those older bass guitars that need new tuners?

On my Danelctro DC I drilled the tuner on the E string slightly larger to accomodate the Thomastic strings I put on it. Of course that doesn't help if the tuner is shot and needs replacement.

The Carvin bass tuners would probably fit on that headstock but don't have that vintage look.

I'd say, wait backstage at a punk group concert. If the bass player has a bass with tuners you like, wait for him to trash it. Then run out and pick up the pieces.

Here's a thought that might be useful. Contact Jerry Jones who makes Danelctro copies and see if he can put you on to any tuners.

All-Parts has a huge variety of tuners. Take a look there if those don't work.
