replacing tuners - some space in headstock ok?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought some Hipshot Ultra Lites for my MIJ Jazz. The diameter of the tuner holes is 9/16".

The tuner shaft of the Ultras is a little bit smaller than the diameter of the holes in the headstock.

Just wondering if this is ok. The replacement was fairly easy but I'm just wondering if having some space between the headstock and the tuner is ok or if they should have a tight fit in the headstock.

no actual experience talking, but i would think you wouldn't want to leave any space for the peg to move around in, throwing your string out of tune and out of alignment. I would devise a way to fill in the space.

Get a bunch of flat toothpicks, an X-acto knife, and some white (Elmer's) glue. Cut a bunch of the toothpicks to length (headstock thickness). Put them, all touching side-to-side, on a small piece of Scotch tape. Take that and drop in into the tuner hole, going around the inner surface of the tuner hole, and then put try putting the tuner in. Too loose? Add some toothpicks. Doesn't fit now? Take a few off. Once you have the correct number for a snug fit, glue them on the inside of the tuner hole. Let it dry, then install the tuner. Once the washer is in place, you'll never see the gap. Done.
