restringing acoustic ibanez

Sign in to disble this ad
im trying to restring my acoustic ibanez bass and once i started i noticed that the tuning pegs have no hole to put the string through, simply a little nook or crevice where the string is supposed to go. but when i string this up and try to tune it, the strings dont hold in place.. any ideas?

Hi, imasnucka.

Welcome to TB.

A pic would help a lot, or a link to a pic that shows the tuners.

Which model Ibanez is it? Most of the tuners I've seen that have a slot (such as the Fenders) also have a vertical hole in the center of the shaft. You're supposed to put the end of the string into this hole, then into the slot, then wind it up. If yours isn't like that then it's one I'm not familiar with. Even so, if you get 3 winds around the tuning peg's shaft and a sharp bend when you first start it, I can't see it slipping.

I've got the Ibanez AEB 10 and it has the vertical hole in the shafts of tuners.

Okay. You know what to do then. Push the end of the string into the hole, make a 90 degree downward bend in the string and lead it into the slot. Then wind away guiding the string with your other hand to keep some tension on it and to make sure each wind wraps on below the previous one. Three winds should do it. You will probably have to snip the strings (at least some of them) off because they'll be overly long and will bunch up over the windings. You don't want this because it'll cause some pretty lumpy tuning. Be careful you don't cut too short. I usually allow 3 1/2" past the tuning peg on most of my basses. Check the threads at the top of the page. There should be something on changing strings.
