Question Resurrection

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently resurrecting an old Yamato (mid 80s) Japanese bass. I've de-fretted the fingerboard and filled in all the usual dings etc.. and would like to varnish / laquer the (now smooth as glass) fingerboard before reassembling the thing. It's a maple neck with a maple fingerboard (as far as I can tell), and am unsure as to what the best way is to protect the wood, bearing in mind that I'll be using roundwound stainless steel strings. Any thoughts?

do what Jaco did...layers of spar varnish...hard as a rock. Some people also use a hard epoxy finish.

Thanks for the reply Timmus, nice to find something that Jaco did that's achievable by everyone else... I guess being a Christian you'd know all about resurrection though.

Yeah on being a Christian...but I think everything that Jaco did musically is achieveable by anyone else if we're willing to put the same time into practice as he did....I know a guy that knew him as a younger man and he said that Jaco always had his bass in his hands playing and trying new stuff...going over and over stuff until he acheived perfection...on the other hand, he had other issues, some medical and others self induced that I don't envy him for, having been on that side of the fence before.

We can learn a lot from him, both in what to do and also what not to do...

plus one on the Jaco thing. A very talented and troubled individual for sure.
