The one I saw advertised for use on all basses and made in Germany (I think) was expensive. It would probably work and seems adjustable enough so you don't deaden the strings too much. I just use a piece of foam jammed under the strings and trimmed to fit until I get the right sound. I figured to store bought kind was way too expensive and would get in the way of using a pick. Not very elegant but it does the job just as well. I get foam in different colours to more closely match the finish on the bass.
I don't know if the Rickenbacker mute would fit or could be adapted. You'd have to take a look at one up close. Someone here might have tried it.
I know that the Fender and Musicman mutes, when they came with the basses, didn't do a very good job. Either too much muting or none at all.
