Rosewood Oil removal for Epoxy

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a rosewood fretless fingerboard I would like to coat with Epoxy so i can slap some roundwounds on without fear for damaging the board.

IF I do it myself I will do the System Three Epoxy coating thing,
BUT I NEED to remove the oil put on the board and the natural oil of the Rosewood fingerboard for my first layer of epoxy to seep into the pores of the wood; WHAT DO I USE TO REMOVE OIL FROM MY FINGERBOARD SAFELY?

--On a side note, if i do not want to do it myself who, besides the Woodwize Thor Luthier, could i get to coat my board for me? For under 200 or so. (Woodwiz is a 2 year wait and 450 dollars for a NT)

The bass i want this done to

Tom, why don't you play it for awhile first, honduran rosewood isn't soft. In fact it's one of the harder woods around. The FB is thick 5/16" you can play it for years before your strings will wear though, if they ever do.

As far as oil removal, I only put one coat of tru-oil on the board, so sanding it out won't take to much.

Not that often when you ask a forum you get the exact maker of your bass.

I was just assuming that the rosewood would be eaten up by steel roundwounds and slapping. I'm curious about the wood in between the maple wings, is it rosewood as well or purpleheart, because they look similar in color. Can't wait for this bass to get here, TBH I dont want to do anything to this bass put play it.

The piece is rosewood, it's the left over cut from the FB. I decided to start doing that on this bass, I think it looks better than the neck stringers between the wings.

As far as the FB being eaten up by roundwound string there was a post about that on the LC awhile back and a few builders and players have had rosewood FB's on fretless basses for 20+ years and never had any problems with it. I used to own a fretless rosewood p bass many years ago. I played it with Roto Sounds for 10 years and never had any trouble.

Thank you John, I'll be sure to send you a review of your bass after a week or so of owning it, is it by chance coming with any strings on it or should i go pick up a set?

OK so maybe you don't need to know now but for someone else's future reference, I use acetone to clean fingerboards before I epoxy coat them.
