"Rounded Out" 3mm Truss Rod Nut...Non-removable!

Sign in to disble this ad
Here's the deal: I just acquired a set-neck bass with the aforementioned affliction. This is a two-way truss rod so the adjustment nut cannot be removed. Previous abuse has rendered the nut near-useless as the appropriate 3mm hex key no longer has the necessary "grab". The trussrod, AFAIK, does work so I really don't want to remove the fingerboard. To further complcate matters, the hex nut access is recessed within the heel so I'm limited to a head-on approach only.

If anybody has any bright ideas, please let me know!

Thanks

Riis

Perhaps an EZ-Out or one of its variations? Clumsy, but it should grab the recesses inside the nut.

Thought of that but then realized there's nothing to remove. We could back the hex nut out as far as it will go but then what? Its also gonna be tough to get a straight shot with any implement as the nut sits a cramped recess / cavity.

Thanks for the suggestion! Down but not out.

Hi.

If tapering a 4mm hex wrench and trying to jam it in the nut doesn't work, taking off the FB might be the only option.

If the truss rod nut is sitting in a shell, that'll be Your only option as the open end of the shell is about the same diameter as the max dia of the 3mm hex. Anything larger than the 3mm hex will just bite to the shell and turn the whole truss rod. I know as that's just what happened with a Washburn T-24 I bought as a scratch and dent.

AWW, CRAP, feel a bit stupid now ;)

Taking off the FB is relatively easy, so don't be too afraid of that.

Regards
Sam
