Routing the pickguard (and body?) for easy access to truss rod?

I have an 80s Japanese PBass. In order to adjust the truss rod, you have to remove the neck of the bass.

I am tempted to route a small dip into the pickguard, and body of the bass, in order to give easy access to the trussrod.

Good idea? Bad idea? How common is this, as a time-saver?

I live in NYC where the temperature fluctuates by about 80 degrees throughout the seasons, and the winter air is notably dry. It seems like the bass needs a setup once (or maybe twice) a year. Taking the neck on and off kind of intimidates me, in fact I've never done it. I've paid pros to set my bass up, but I've also gone long stretches where it's needed a setup (because it needs a setup at least once a year, maybe twice IMO). As a result, I'm not playing this bass very much. And that is bumming me out.
