rust! oxidation!

i live quite close to the sea, my magnet poles on my pick-ups are starting to rust, also on a different bass the hardware is turning green!!!

im more concerned about the rust, i know its because of moisture in the air.

what i'd like to know is-

1. does the rest effect the magnets efficiency

2. is there anything i can do to help protect parts from rusting

thanks!

1. No.

2. Not really. Leaving it in the case and wiping it down every time you finished playing might help, but doubtful since you live on the ocean.

3. You can (very carefully) scrub the poles with a wire brush to take off the rust. The green patina you're getting is pretty much there to stay.

Put a dehumidifier in the room where you keep the bass.

The salt in the air is contributing to the rust as well.

A good way to help keep the rust down is to use something like Fast Fret to coat the strings and frets, to give them a protective coating. A rag with a little mineral oil will do the trick on the other metal bits.
