| Your Thumb Bo should have an unfinished (meaning raw) wenge or ovangkol neck depending on the year. There is no need to sand it down unless years of playing/sweat/funk has entered the pores of the wood or you've been waxing the neck consistently and made it glossy. If this is the case, sanding is no problem...just hit it with some higher grit (400 -800 grit) or some non-metallic Scotchbrite pad (00 - 0000 steel wool equivalent). Then you can just leave it as is or hit it with a light coat of oil/wax (I like Howard's Feed-n-Wax - cheaper and better than Warwick Wax).
Of course, if you're trying to slim the neck down by sanding, that's no problem either. Just don't try to turn a baseball bat into an Ibanez neck....minor profile sanding/shaving is fine. Keep in mind that wenge dust is toxic - "The dust given off when cutting or sanding Wengé can cause dermatitis similar to the effects of Poison ivy and is an irritant to the eyes. The dust can cause respiratory problems and drowsiness." Make sure you have an EXCELLENT respirator, wear gloves/long sleeve shirt/gloggles and do all the sanding outside.
Hope that helps. |
