Sanding the neck

Sign in to disble this ad
So after doing some ready I decided to sand the back on the neck on my Marcus jazz. I used the finest sandpaper {forgot the actual size} I ran up and down the neck as light as I could several times.
I assume I removed a bit of gloss from the neck. Here is my question. Should I add some oil or wax back there or just leave it?

I use an airbrush to put on a light layer of clear auto paint. A couple of layers, sanded back then polished. SLides great and can be soooo smooth.

Assuming you sanded the back of the neck to reduce thumb drag, if you are happy with the way it looks you are done. Oil is a finish and your neck is already finished with lacquer. Oil will only make a mess. You can wax it if you like but it will defeat the purpose of the sanding that you performed in the first place by increasing drag.

Yeah I sanded the back of neck to get rid of the "stickiness" of the neck while playing. I LOVE the way it feels now, just worried about if I damaged it. I didn't really take too much off I hope.

steel wool works great too. just invasive enough to break up the goo, but not enough to cause any "errors".

IMHO just leave it, whatever you do, DON'T use wax.

Assuming that it's a finished maple neck (being a MM Jazz, after all) and assuming that you didn't go all the way thru the finish, then yes - you're done. the finish is still all, all you did was knock the gloss off of it to give it a much mor playable texture.

I do this too, although I prefer 0000 steel wool - same difference. If you had an unfinished neck like wenge or bubinga, you might need to follow up with some lemon oil or linseed oil, but yours is better left alone.
