Scratch plate screws

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, i have a 70's p bass and i need to get the the scratch plate off to fix a bad earth. I think its from the tone pot.
The problem is that the screw heads on the scratchplate are so rusted and worn that they cant be removed with a screw driver. How can i get it off?

Thanks in advance, Adam

first off - make sure you are using the correct sized tip on your Phillips screwdriver. too big or too small and you can easily have issues

secondly, it's hard to imaging that "normally installed" scratch plate (aka pickguard) screws would give you issues when attempting to remove them since they are rather short and don't allow for much torque when installing them. did somebody glue them into place by chance?

all the best,

R

I second the suggestion to try different sixes of screwdriver tips. Chances are you're using a #2 Phillips, but a #1 is often the correct size for pickguard screws. You also want a screwdriver with a sharp, fresh tip.

If you need to clean rust out of the screw tops so you can get the screwdriver tip to seat, I'd use a dental pick (available in many tool stores) but be extremely careful not to let it slip and scratch the pickguard or the finish. Applying protective tape around the screws might be a good idea.
