Look closely at the exposed threads on the pot. If the nut was screwed on cross threaded, it should be obvious. If the threads look OK but the nut wont back off, press straight in on the shaft of the pot while turning the nut CCW. Sometime, the nut has been overtightened and the threads will be stripped but only in the tightened position. Pushing in on the pot may make the threads "grab", allowing the nut to be screwed off. If the threads are damaged the full length of the threaded part of the pot, you'll probably have to replace the pot. If the threads are OK except for the portion of the pot where the nut tightens, you might try shimming the nut up to the good threads with a washer under the nut.

If the threads on the pot appear to be OK and you can turn the nut but the nut wont screw off you could try another nut on top of the existing nut. Only tighten it enough to hold the pot in place. Avoid overtightening it.

Good luck.

IT LOOKS LIKE ITS SLIPPING ONLY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SHAFT. GOOD IDEA ON USING SECOND NUT. GOING TO TRY THAT WHEN I GET HOME THANKS FOR THE HELP. TONY
