Set-neck Rickenbacker woes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone. My old '80 Rick 4000 is having some serious issues. The set-neck is beginning to pull away from the body; slowly leaning out of the cavity it's glued into. The more string tension there is, the worse it gets, and it makes playing in standard E-tuning a horrible experience, with close to a full inch of action in the upper register. I've spoken to a local Rick dealer/guitar shop about fixing it, and they suggested bringing it in for them to have a look at, and possibly sending it out to Rickenbacker for the repairs.

Anyhow, I started to wonder if I could do this myself. Does anyone here have experience/advice regarded resetting my neck? What kinda of glue to use, wood preperation, things to look out for, etc. Thanks for whatever help can be given!

I'd let the guys at Rickenbacker do it for me, if I had no experience doing it before. I mean, I'm sure resetting a neck isn't rocket science. However I wouldn't want to first try it on my quite rare 1980 Rickenbacker 4000.

It sound like the neck needs to be reset to the body. If I remember correctly the body on a lot of those 4000 basses did not have a lot of meat in the area of the neck pocket. I am not sure but I think that some if not all of those were routed for a neck pick up leaving to little wood to hold the neck properly. Might want to ask the people over at http://forum.rickresource.com/ They know way to much about Ricks

I would suggest removing all tension and taking it in to get looked at
