Hi All,

Please forgive the idleness of my question, but...

I'm a long-time guitar player, just bought my first bass. It's a Hofner Icon. I'm wondering if its dangerous to not get a pro setup right away? Could this potentially cause long term damage to the bass itself?

It came with what looks like a pretty good factory setup. It's definitely playable and I don't notice any major intonation problems. The neck has just a little bit of relief in it, but its pretty much straight.

I'm a little light on cash after the purchase. Can a setup wait a while? I'm not so concerned with playability and sound- as I'm just starting out- I just don't want to run the risk of doing something to the bass that's not reversible. Thanks!

you should be ok. most basses come (like you said) from the factory with a pretty decent setup job. unless you notice any major problems with the neck, you should be ok IMO.

The only thing long-term that can really mess up your bass is if it's left with too much relief or back-bow in the neck. (bowed too much in any direction). If it's nearly straight, you should be fine.
