Set-up, string change....now neck up-bow??

Sign in to disble this ad
I put new strings on my bass, same gauge and just had a set up like a week ago. The strings are different brand but same gauge and the neck as a slight up-bow, as it has...does the neck need to be perfectly straight? It plays well, no fret buzz and I like the sound so I assume its ok...just don't know how much up-bow is too much..doesn't look like much, the strings don't buzz, plays nice so I assume i'm good, just making sure?

The gauge only measures the thickness of the string, the new strings must have more tension. So they are pulling on the neck with greater force. What you need is a truss rod adjustment.

No.

"the strings don't buzz, plays nice so I assume i'm good, just making sure?"

What are you worried about?

Call the guy that set up your bass. Many luthiers set the neck with a slight bow. A good way to check it yourself is fret a string at the first fret and the last fret (at the same time). Using the string as a straight edge look under the fifth fret. You should see a little daylight (approx 12 thousands) if you want to measure it. I simply use a straight edge (needs to be as long as your fret board). Do this at both sides of the fret board (under the E and G if it is a four string) to check for twist. Your probably OK.

I actually had a chance to stop into the shop today and the guy checked it out and said all I should do is set the intonation at the 12th fret if i wanted....it was "almost" there but he said i could make minor adjustments...other than that, neck is right on...all is well...thanks guys!
