Question Set Ups. Am I doing it enough?

Sign in to disble this ad
We all are suppost to know how to do it and some of us do but, I don't know how so I gotta know.

Do I get my bass set up once a year or what?

I constantly have my ATK305 set up with Blue Steels mediums .45 - .128 and tuned BDADG and switch it up for a set that can range from BEADG (Standard) to ADAGF to BDACF.

I get my bass set up once a year is this appropriate for the abuse that I put on it?

I am also a heavy hitter and use a pick.

When you change the string gauge's and/or tunings; re-check the neck relief, and intonation.

Typically an instrument will need to be set up at least twice a year, depending on the climate where you are. Where I am the humidity in the summer months can get quite high, and during the winter months with the central heating cranked up, humidity levels can drop to 20% or less. It's the changes in humidity that cause the wood to move, thus requiring setups. So a setup is needed once the furnace has been on for a while, and again when it's turned off and the humidity levels increase.

for me I tend to do a full set up when
1) get new gauge strings on there
2)Maybe once a year beside that

The rest of the time I tend to make a small tweak here or there. I find when you are dealing with good to high quality great things don't shift around drastically too much but this may change in other climates. I have gotten good at just feeling when one of my basses needs an adjustment---I think that is the goal cause then you will know what you need...Good luck

Although periodic adjustments may be needed, to answer your question, no you don't NEED to ever have your bass set up. If it plays to your liking leave it. If not, do a set up. Intonation every string change.

Since you play hard, you will likely need a fret job sooner than a light player would. But playing hard doesn't affect the setup if everything is staying put.

Learn how and then you can charge your guitards 50 bucks to do theirs!
