Setting up the Ibanez

Sign in to disble this ad
I had posted elsewhere about the deal that I got on an Ibanez RD500... Well I thought I had it set up pretty good, but I guess not. At my first practice with it, there was some pretty bad fret buzz on the E string at about the 7th down to the bridge.

So... I tightned up the truss rod a 1/4 turn and raised the bridge a bit. It appears to be helping, but my clearance is about .635mm. The spec says .500 so I guess I got a bit more to go.

Anywho here are the questions:
1) The bridge on the E string is about maxed out on height... what do I do now if I have to take out more relief?
2) Why only the E string?! Is there something else that I need to look at as well? It gets progressively worse after the 10th fret.

Added notes:
I am running .105's on there now. I tune E-A-D-G

They guy before me had .110's, the A string was a .90, can't remeber the rest but they sure were meats! I am pretty sure he was tuned a whole octave down across the neck. I think it sat in a closet for a year or so.

Any help or comments is appreciated.

Ox.

1...does the relief look right to you....if you like it at 0.635, then stay there....but if you want less, the do that....
2...reducing relief should only help you with the E-string and straightening the neck will effectively drop the nut with respect to the body and hence, lower your action...if you do max out on your screws, you may have to consider a shim

3...What gets progressively worse after the 10th fret?

One of my basses with really level frets, I run with nearly no relief....the saddle adjustments are quite high considering that my action is really quite low...

another one of my basses, I run with a little relief (not much about 0.5)....since, I've flattened it a bit (used to be more), I've been able to raise the saddles a little without really affecting the action much, and this has improved buzz on a couple of high frets up on the board (i did a level already, will need a touch up, I think)...btw...on this bass, the saddles are adjusted relatively low considering that the action is actually medium (not as low ad the 1st bass)

So my question to you is this? Is what you are doing improving the situation? If yes, then you're going in the right direction....
remember....little itty bitty changes at a time...
