Question Setting up an old Squire P-Bass for Rotosound Tru Bass 88 Nylon Taperound Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Recently I thought I would go out and but some Rotosound Tru Bass 88's, as Herbie Flowers recommended them at one of his workshops. I didn't want to lose the versatility of my other bass, so I thought I would put them on my Squire P-Bass.

And, it was obviously not designed for them, so I still want to use them, but there are a couple of problems, as the gauge of them is different.
  • G + A Strings are too big for the nut. (new nut, or should I file the existing one?)
  • Fret buzz on all of the strings.

Any tips greatly appreciated

Mark

I have a squire p bass special with these strings , I opted to file the nut with some files as I figured its better than forking out for someone else to do basically the same thing , although depending on your technical skill you might decide to do this or have someone else do it. With regards to the fret buzz , I would recommend you try raising the saddles slightly or failing that have a setup done, however it is probably best not to do this until you have sorted out the nut. I found my trubass strings buzzed a little at first due to the change in tension from my previous strings but found that after the strings had settled in (about a day or so later) , the buzzes had pretty much gone.

Thanks, i filed it a bit, and then raised the bridge a tiny bit, and it worked perfectly.

Nice sound too! (Considering it IS the second cheapest bass a Fender company makes)

I had to file the nut a little on my bass , the strings sat in the grooves but kind of sat a little on top of them (if you know what I mean) , filed the nut and they sit perfect now. These are my favourite strings , I went through a phase of trying different flatwounds but none of them sounded half as good as the Trubass strings.

You guys should learn the correct spelling of an instrument that you own.

And you should be finding something better to do with your time.

For the nut you could try filing then if it doesn't work then buy a new nut.

Fret buzz take it for a pro set up.
